Take a stroll through history...

The entire Kiama region stretching north from the Minninmurra River to Gerringong and Gerroa in the south offers a wealth of breath taking scenery from unspoilt beaches stretching into the distance to natural rainforest and the magnificent peaks of the Jamberoo Mountain escarpment.

Kiama is steeped in history and reminders of an interesting past can easily be discovered by taking a casual stroll around the centre of town. A good place to start is at the Blowhole Point where the Kiama Lighthouse and Pilots centre are both buildings with much historic value. Kiama's famous federal style post office was built in the 1880's and the sandstone courthouse nearby is dated at 1860.

Art and craft enthusiasts will enjoy the variety of shops and galleries catering to their hobbies and interests in the Kiama district.

A map and more information about historic places within walking distance of Kiama is available from the Kiama Visitors Centre at Blowhole Point. The map details the Kiama History Walk, complete with fascinating information and dates on each stopping point.

Antique shops, recreation parks and nature walks are just part of the Jamberoo Valley. Located just 15 minutes west of Kiama. Jamberoo is a well kept secret that is just waiting to be explored.

Trace your family's history
Family history research has been a quiet hobby with people for many years however of late it has been booming. Events such as the bicentennary, the new century and now the centenary of the Commonwealth have all added impetus to this boom. The Internet has had an impact with some people who have found some information whilst 'surfing the net' and this inevitably leads to serious research at places such as the Kiama Family History Centre that are equipped for such a task.

Task is perhaps the wrong word to use when talking family history, as family history is fun. It is in fact a great detective story with you as the sleuth and the surprises will come thick and fast as you start delving back in your past uncovering facts the family had not known before. Because of its facilities functions and opening times, plus the fact it is a local council operation, the Kiama Family History Centre is unique to the world.

Resources at the Kiama Family History Centre enable you to research back to the first arrivals and then in their places or origin and beyond. Staff at the centre can help in this search helping you to unfold a canvas of great proportions. The 700 million plus entries at the Kiama Centre, which is open to the public, seven days per week (9.30 am - 4.30 pm), are sure to hold something exciting for the researcher. The Kiama Centre conduct courses in family and social history research throughout the year. These one day courses have been running since 1989 and are today as popular as ever.
