Discovery
There are major man made
attractions that are a must see and are quite unique to
Wollongong. In a remarkable setting Australias
Industry World offers a unique adventure for those
wishing to experience one of Australias most
dynamic industrial processes - steel making. The Steel
Tour is a personally guided, audio/video assisted two
hour tour through BHPs Steel making plant at Port
Kembla. Witness first-hand the explosive fireworks of
molten steel and visit otherwise restricted areas.
Australias
exciting Science
Centre and Planetarium
is guaranteed to entertain all ages for many hours with
hundreds of hands on exhibits and galactic
shows and laser concerts in the planetarium theatre that
will take you away from planet earth - and bring you back
again.
Another major feature is the Nan
Tien Temple.
Located at Berkeley, 5 kilometres south of Wollonong it
is the largest Buddhist temple in the Southern hemisphere
and is open to the public.
A popular walk is around Wollongong Harbour, where there
is always plenty of action with the fishing boats showing
off their catch, playgrounds and a safe beach for the
kids. Take the walk to the lighthouse headland and the
heritage walk which outlines the development of the
harbour since settlement.
Cycling is a great option to take in the fresh sea air
and scenery - with many kilometres of cycle tracks around
the foreshore and parklands. Bikes for all the family can
be hired to suit your needs.
Horse
riding is a popular and enjoyable way to explore the
flora and fauna of Wollongong's surrounding countryside
with trails through rainforest, pristine coastal habitats
and along the breathtaking Illawarra escarpment. Many
people hire a horse for a day or longer, from one of the
reputable horse riding schools located in the Illawarra.
