BRAIDWOOD
On your way over the Clyde Mountain enjoy the natural surroundings and scenic vistas before you reach the charming township of Braidwood. The Braidwood district was discovered by the European community in 1822 and its potential as a fine agricultural region was quickly recognised.
Gold was discovered in 1851 and thousands of hopeful miners rushed to the district which literally grew overnight. These days although a fossick in the local streams can sometimes yield result, most visitors are attracted to Braidwood for its heritage charm and the fascinating remnants of days gone by around every corner. A browse through Braidwood's shops will quickly reveal a fascinating mix of history and modern business. Braidwood's main street is still dominated by 19th century buildings inhabited by a mix of businesses from friendly hotels to cosmopolitan art galleries. For those looking for more active pursuits, try Braidwood's nine hole golf course, bowling greens, squash courts and other sporting facilities at the Braidwood Servicemen's Club. In the centre of town, Ryrie Park, surrounded by trees and gardens is the perfect spot to relax a while.
If seeking a touch of history, a visit to Braidwood's Anglican and Catholic church will be interesting. The Museum also houses a fine collection of historical artifacts and information about the districts past.
Braidwood celebrates in April with its historic past at the annual Heritage Festival. Visitors are made aware of Braidwood's diverse past, the turmoil of the gold mining era, the influence of Chinese settlers and the hard working farmers. People are encouraged to dress in period costumes to add to the festivity of the day.
In November each year, the historic town of Braidwood becomes a mecca for quilters and tourists as it hosts its Quilt Event and the famous 'Airing of the Quilts'. In February there are the Braidwood Races 'Braidwood Cup'.
