Meroogal is a delightful timber house built in 1885 located in the heart of Nowra. The house contains all the original contents collected over four generations by the Thorburn and McGregor families, who were predominantly women.
Meroogal is now the property of the Historic Houses Trust of N.S.W. The house is open to the public on weekends and public holidays for guided tours which uncover the fascinating history of the old home. Take a trip back in time to the early days of settlement in the Shoalhaven and explore historic Meroogal.
An interesting range of artefacts used by the Aboriginal residents of the district's earliest days, including a breastplate given in 1834 to Neddy Noora, are just some of the fascinating items to see at Nowra's Museum. Early goldmining days at nearby Yalwal is well represented, and there is currently a display of surveying equipment staged by local company, Allen Price and Associates.Administered by the Shoalhaven Historical Society, members are willing to assist community groups on matters of historical significance, and are always keen to gain additional information. The Nowra Museum, at the corner of Plunkett and Kinghorne Streets was built as the local police station in 1900, it had this purpose until the mid 1970's, by which time it had well outgrown the station staff.
The museum is open from 1 until 4 pm each Saturday and Sunday, and during school holiday periods, on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at the same times. Group bookings are available by phoning Robyn Florance on (02) 4422 1228.
