Shoalhaven's city centre has had a face-lift! Nowra has been revitalised during 1998 with a complete streetscape development transforming its main Junction Street. Over a seven month period, Junction Street saw a complete structural alteration. Pavements were widened and paved, car parking areas and scramble crossings were paved, the road was resurfaced, gardens were repositioned, and decorative facades and canopies installed.

The task was monumental, requiring the repositioning of drainage line and telephone and electricity cables. The majority of buildings in Junction Street were built between 1880-1920. In the 1950's the sites now housing the Commonwealth Bank and Best and Less were large, iron lace encrusted hotels. For some time the streetscape progress was slowed because of the discovery of the wine cellars that formed part of these original buildings.

The changes in architectural fashion has meant that many of the buildings in Junction Street have removed their window mouldings, veranda's and posts. As a result, decorative iron lattice has been suspended between the street poles in order to bring more continuity to the street.

The streetscape has also enabled the business comm-unity to forge closed ties with the arts community. Rodway Arcade, one of the main pedestrian thoroughfares, was paved in mosaic tiles to show the geographical path of the Shoalhaven River and the industry that has developed on its banks.

Nowra's CBD is the centre of attention for socialising with together with the Bridge Tavern & Empire Hotel, there is the Shoalhaven's Ex-Serviceman's Club, Nowra Bowling Club and the Postman Tavern. Don't forget to venture out to Bomaderry on the north side of the bridge to enjoy all the activities at Bomaderry's RSL and Bowling Clubs. Nowra and Surrounds Clubs & Pubs
