Many of the
wineries on the South Coast of NSW between Gerringong and
Bega have won significant awards and have set a very high
and unique standard of flavours and blends that brings
wine connoisseurs back for more.
Whenever you open a bottle of South Coast wine at your
dining table you will relive the whole South Coast
experience. You will recall the point of purchase, maybe
a magnificent multi-award winning winery or a small
family winery hidden away in a picturesque valley.
As you enjoy sipping your selection you will be able to
discuss the beauty of the vineyard where the grapes were
lovingly nurtured to satisfy your palate and the family
members and workers who actually picked the grapes,
bottled the wine and informed you of all the wines
characteristics as you sampled the many varieties
available to you.
Your guests will only be impressed with your newfound
knowledge and would probably love to join you on your
next 'wine drive' along this magnificent coastline. Many
of these wineries offer a mail order service if you need
more for your cellar, or a gift for that special
friend.
The selection of wines available on the coast include
Shiraz, Chambourcin, Verdelho, Chardonnay, Cabernet
Sauvignon, Merlo, Verdelho-Semillon and Sauvignon
Blanc.
The first grapes on the
south coast were grown at Coolangatta Estate by Alexander
Berry in the mid 1880's, but it was only in 1988 that the
potential was seen to develop a winery which would expand
the estate's tourism facilities and begin to re-establish
the Shoalhaven as a wine growing area.
The range of Estate red and white whites have won in
excess of 280 medals with the 1998 Coolangatta Estate
Semillion winning gold at the 2001 Cowra Wine Show and
twice NSW Top 40.
Varieties now include the whites; Chardonnay, Verdelho,
Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon and reds; Cabernet
Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot and Chambourcin. Coolangatta
Estate is the largest Shoalhaven Vineyard, producing
5,000 cases of wine annually. Website
